Black History Month

Join us in celebrating the unity and heritage we share as His children

February is Black History Month, also known as National African American History Month, which is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history.

The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.

At His Branches we seek to celebrate the unity and solidarity we share with one another all year long by the lives of service we live together in His Name in our community. Please join us in reaching out to our neighbors and learning to share about our heritage in ways that up-build the love, respect, and honor we have for all of God’s children.

Together with Martin Luther King, Jr. we long for the time “when children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character… and when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”
